Bead Your bedlah
Bedlah means “suit” and is therefore the “suit” a belly dancer wears. In its most basic form, the bedlah is the bra and belt set. They are made of the same color and fabric and have the same type of decorations, in matching patterns (if any) to create a uniform look. Generally, solid silver or gold forms the basis of most belly dancers’ first bedlah (the Hathor’s Hips belly dance troupe has decided to go with silver).
The basic bra and belt can be matched with a variety of skirts, vests, u-tops, veils and other props. More complicated bedlah sets may include skirt, vest, head band, arm bands, arm drapes, ankle bands, veil and even jewelry, all in matching colors and patterns.
You can spend hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars on professional costumes and you will still have to alter them to get the right fit. Luckily there is a cheaper alternative, learn to make your own! Bead Your Bedlah will teach you to make your own bra and belt. In this workshop Huraiva will take you through the steps of converting a lingerie bra into a dance bra and the steps to create a dance belt.
We will start with the basics of sewing for those who aren’t familiar with hand sewing. We will then do some basic beading techniques to help you build the skills to add some bling to your bedlah. After the basic skills we will move on to covering the bra and finally the construction of the belt.
This workshop can be offered as an all day event, or split into two half day workshops, 4 hours for the bra and 5 hours for the belt. When split, the basic sewing and beading portions are taught in both halves so that students may start with either part. If you are interested in hosting Huraiva to teach this workshop in your area, please contact her at huraiva@bellydancetopeka.com
