Belly Dance and Yoga
by Huraiva

Yoga is a natural partner for your belly dance practice. Many yoga poses increase balance, flexibility and core strength all of which are important to being able to perform belly dance moves safely and correctly. In fact, many belly dance schools around the county require their students enroll in yoga classes in addition to belly dance classes!

There are many options for adding a yoga practice to your weekly routine. The easiest method is often to use a yoga DVD. I have listed some of the ones I use on the Yoga page of the DVD recommendations. Monday through Friday, a yoga DVD is how I start my day and it leaves me feeling energized and ready for whatever else might be in store.

If you can fit it into your schedule, I highly recommend enrolling in a yoga class with an instructor. The Shawnee County Parks and Recreation offers an incredible deal on yoga classes. I recommend the ones taught by Mimi. I have taken both her Monday night yoga class and her Saturday morning classes. If I could make both work for my schedule year round, I’d enroll in both of them!

I encourage you to explore yoga as an addition to your dance practice.
